Grants for Students

A. All Disciplines Award.

Description:

This award provides candidates at all degree levels (undergraduate, master’s and doctoral) with the dynamic opportunity to pursue research or internships relating to their thesis, dissertation, or individual fieldwork on issues of relevance to both countries.

Fields of Study:

Although applications will be accepted in all fields of study, the Fulbright Commission (COMEXUS) is especially interested in attracting students pursuing fieldwork or internships in public administration or public policy. Other fields of interest for COMEXUS are projects conducted by U.S. students on Mexican culture, society and politics to deepen the understanding of Mexico in the United States. Areas of collaboration go far beyond border issues, which are also of relevance to the Commission, and can include projects on migration, ecological issues, public health, education, public policy, environmental protection, human rights and trade policy. COMEXUS will also support projects in the arts that further dialogue and contact between U.S. and Mexican arts communities.

Applications will be accepted in all fields of study except medicine and dentistry.

Requirements:

Language:

Fluent Spanish is strongly recommended. Fulbright Language Report is required.

      Degree:

Candidates must hold a minimum of a B.S./B.A. degree. Graduating seniors at the time of application must include final transcripts once available indicating completion of the degree program. Applicants with a master’s degree, doctoral degree candidates, young artists and professionals are also eligible. Candidates who plan to conduct research for their theses should provide a letter of approval from their advisers.

Affiliation:

Applicants should secure a letter of affiliation from an academic institution, preferably a Mexican university or research institution. Those applicants who are selected as grantees and still lack confirmation from an appropriate Mexican host university or institution may be assisted by the Commission in identifying and negotiating an affiliation with a Mexican academic institution.

Additional Information:
Maintenance:

A monthly housing and subsistence allowance from $1,200 to $1,400 depending on the location in Mexico where the Grantee will work.

Travel and Relocation:

One round-trip international air ticket for the grantee only, plus a one time settling in allowance of $200. Grantees who opt to drive to Mexico will receive a flat sum of $800 for round-trip driving expenses.

Other Benefits:

A one time allowance of $500 for research and educational materials.

Dependents:

Additional dependent allowances of $150 per month for one dependent and $250 per month for two or more dependents.

*Allowance levels are subject to change at the discretion of the Commission. All payments are in U.S. dollars unless requested otherwise.

Visa requirements:

For all awards, grantees must have an FM-3 visa before entering the country under a Fulbright-Garcia Robles scholarship. The Commission will process the FM-3 visa for the grantees and their dependents prior to their arrival in Mexico. Those candidates possessing dual U.S. and Mexican nationality are required by Mexican law to enter Mexico on their Mexican passport and will not receive an FM-3 visa.

The issuance of all visas is the responsibility of the Instituto Nacional de Migración and the Commission has no control over the timeframe of this process.
