C. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Program.

Description:  

The TEFL Program is designed to meet current English teaching needs in all levels of the educational system within Mexico. This program offers many opportunities to senior level TEFL specialists for involvement in strengthening or creating programs at the B.A. and M.A. levels to train teachers. This award specifically supports faculty and program development, not the teaching of English, so applicants should have teacher training and curriculum development experience. Other assets would be the ability to work in a consulting capacity, administrative experience, and flexibility.

Grant Activity:  

Teach TEFL methodology courses and seminars to faculty members. Assist with staff and teacher training. Assist in the development of B.A. and M.A. programs at public universities. Consult in areas of need determined by the host institution, which may include but not be limited to curriculum development and evaluation, testing and evaluation, and program design and implementation.
 

Requirements:  

Language:

Fluent Spanish is strongly desired; applicants must submit a Fulbright Language Proficiency Report.
 

      Degree:

M.A. or Ph.D. in TEFL/TESOL or Applied Linguistics and a minimum of 3 years of experience in teacher training.
 

     

Affiliation:

 

Commission will assist with placement based on current in-country needs but the applicant may express a preference. The Commission encourages grantees to work with public universities and academic institutions located outside the major metropolitan areas.
 

Additional Information:
Stipend:  

$2,300 per month for grantees at the full professor or associate professor rank or professional equivalent; $1,800 for grantees at the assistant professor rank or professional equivalent.
 

Maintenance:  

A monthly housing and subsistence allowance from $1,200 to $1,400 depending on the location in Mexico where the grantee will work.
 

Travel and Relocation:  

One round-trip international air ticket for the grantee not to exceed $1,000. One-time settling-in allowance of $1,200. Grantees who opt to drive to Mexico will receive a flat sum of $800 for round-trip driving expenses.
 

Other Benefits:  

A reimbursable allowance of $750 for books to be donated to the host institution upon the grantee’s departure.
 

Dependents:  

Additional dependent allowances of $250 per month for one dependent, $400 per month for two dependents, $500 per month for 3 or more dependents.
 

*Allowance levels are subject to change at the discretion of the Commission. All payments are in U.S. dollars unless requested otherwise.
 
Visa requirements:

For all awards, grantees must have an FM-3 visa before entering the country under a Fulbright-Garcia Robles scholarship. The Commission will process the FM-3 visa for the grantees and their dependents prior to their arrival in Mexico. Those candidates possessing dual U.S. and Mexican nationality are required by Mexican law to enter Mexico on their Mexican passport and will not receive an FM-3 visa.

The issuance of all visas is the responsibility of the Instituto Nacional de Migración and the Commission has no control over the timeframe of this process.

Starting Date:  

September 2010 or January 2011 for one semester grants; September 2009 for academic year grants.
 

Period of Grant:   From three to nine months. Full academic year grants (nine months) are preferred, however, applications of less than nine months will also be considered.
 
Number of grants awarded:   Up to 3.
